Beach Hut World at the Chelsea Flower Show

Beach Hut World was delighted to have been invited to participate in the 2005 Chelsea Flower Show.

This was not only a first for Beach Hut World but also for Chelsea since this was the first time that a beach hut had had ever been incorporated in one of the designs. There had always been sectional wooden buildings for gardens but a beach hut was a first. Although people are beginning to erect beach huts in their gardens because of their lively appearance and unusual design, this is not their usual habitat!

To overcome this, a design was created to make the hut feel completely at home! The Big Grass Company from Devon came up with a beach scene in the form of a sand dune.

The hut was constructed and painted off site for final assembly at Chelsea. This was a first for us but not for the Big Grass Company who are regular exhibitors. It was an exciting if somewhat hectic few days.

What struck us was the very slick organisation behind the Chelsea organisation, resulting in a very well oiled machine. It was also interesting to see many of the gardening personalities including Tommy Walsh from Ground Force. No sooner had we finished the hut then the huge rigid marquee in which we were situated started filling with plants, grasses and flowers.

The Big Grass Companys exhibit was entitled the URBAN SURFER. The sand dune and hut featured beautiful grasses and restios. The picture to the left shows the interior and designer deckchair. This was used as the location for an interview on the BBC''''s lunchtime coverage of the Chelsea Show.

Everyone''''s effort was rewarded when the exhibit was awarded a Silver Medal.

Technical Notes: The beach hut is the smallest hut in our range at 6 foot x 6 foot. It is constructed from high quality tanalised timber. All nails and fixings are stainless steel and the hinges are what we call "farm gate" quality. It was painted using the finest coatings from Sikkens and in fact the same paint as used on HMS Victory in Portsmouth Harbour.
